You know how when your favorite funny person writes a book that you can’t wait to buy, and when you do, you read it and it isn’t funny? This is NOT one of those books.
I bought Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me? by Mindy Kaling after reading a review of it in Real Simple magazine. They loved it and sold me with their description of how funny it was. It’s that time of year when I need a good laugh, so I was happy to give it a shot.
It did not disappoint.
Let me just say that, before buying it, I had no idea who Mindy Kaling was. I know, I know, I don’t know what’s wrong with me sometimes either. This is what happens when you devote all of your TV time to The Food Network and HGTV. I now know Mindy Kaling is an incredibly funny writer, actor and producer for NBC’s The Office, a show I’ve only seen twice. (I know! Duh to me!)
I’d call this book a memoir. A very funny memoir. It’s a collection of essays that tell the story of Mindy’s life. I love it because her story is one that us girls can all relate to on some level, and she tells it in a way that made me laugh out loud more than once. It felt good to laugh at those things we all probably took way too seriously when we were young. I appreciate Mindy’s sense of humor, it’s right on par with mine and she uses it well to illustrate her life. Her observations are hilarious with a little sarcasm thrown in for good measure. Perfect. I especially loved the summer camp story, and the behind the scenes look she gives of her (very) short time at Saturday Night Live.
I love this book. It’s kind of short (it took me two nights to read), and left me wanting to read more. It also left me feeling good. There’s nothing like a little laughter to cure the holiday blues, right? This book did that for me.
You can get the hardcover at Amazon here, or the Kindle version here.
Next up? Tina Fey’s Bossy Pants. Have you read it? I hope it’s as funny as this one. I’m counting on you Tina! There’s still a few days left to go in this holiday season!
I hope all of you are holding up well and loving the season. Take care!
xoxo
